Please help: E61 web browser suddenly crashing every time

My E61 has been working perfectly all along, but now suddenly whenever I try to open the default web browser from the standby screen, it just tries to open for about a second, and then closes and goes back to the standby screen. Every time.

It's not running in the background because when I use task manager, it isn't open, I can't switch to it. I've tried turning the phone off and on, removing the battery, everything. The web browser just won't open anymore.

Has anyone ever had this happen? Does anyone know of a way to fix it? Please help, thanks...

Thanks.. do you have any idea what causes this in the first place? I didn't change anything.. is it likely a virus? Is there any FREE anti-virus software for s60v3?

Could you kindly point me to a thread that will tell me how to back up EVETYTHING including system settings for my E61, onto my SD card? So that after I hard reset it will restore all settings and preferences, contacts, saved messages etc, to the way they are now? Everything identical minus the crashing problem? Thanks again...

Look in your menus for the Memory Icon and select it. From there select options and you will see the option to back up. Select it and voila! Once you've reset it, restore from the same memory icon you backed it up from. All your settings will be in order and most applications will be re-installed without a hitch. I say most because some apps need to be reinstalled. It seems kind of random as to which ones do and which ones dont but perhaps someone else can give you a more scientific answer. I usually just go **** I guess I have to reinstall that then...

Hard resetting did NOT fix the problem!!!!

The web browser still won't open!!!!!!!

EDIT: Immediately after hard resetting, the browser WILL open normally, but as soon as I restore my settings etc from memory card or PC Suite backup, it goes back to not opening!!!

AAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!

At least you know the answer is within your settings. Why not start totally fresh considering your browser was working prior to reapplying your backup. I know it's a pain in the ### but sounds like your only real alternative.

What kind of setting could possibly be causing that? I didn't change anything recently, and it was working earlier today. For all I know, it will just start happening at random at some point again, just like it did this time. Starting fresh would be quite impractical as I had everything set up just the way I wanted it, and I really don't want to go through that again.

Could it be a virus?

I doubt it's a virus but you've answered your own question. It seems impractical but without your old settings reapplied it was working fine.

.....you did mention that it doesnt work from the active standby icon. I imagine you've tried it through the menus but does it react any differently? I know I had the exact same thing happen to my E61 and the hard reset worked fine. I always start things fresh however when I reset after problems..meaning....reformatting the memory card and starting completely fresh. I've been using s60s for so long it doesnt seem like much of a chore for me to get things exactly how I like them aside from reinstalling the various apps I like to have at my disposal. I remember hofo member Ollywompus had suggested keeping a .sis file on your mmc but keeping them organized in a folder on your desktop is just as effective when your in this situation. Shouldnt be more than 20 minutes to reinstall everything and another 5 to get the settings how I want them. donkno....just seems like the only solution right now. Reset and it works...reappy and it doesnt... ...I say go with what you know instead of digging deep to find out why. I asked this question months ago to no avail. The only advice given was a hardreset and starting clean and it worked with no further hiccups through the rest of my time with the E61.

goodluck though and hopefully someone can give you a more definitive answer.

Thanks for your help and advice, I really do appreciate it. The web browser behaves the same way from the menu as from the active standby screen. Tries to open but doesn't.

I admit I am the type of person who does not like to solve things by just dumping and restarting from scratch. I prefer to understand what went wrong and why, so I can avoid it happening again in the future. Otherwise it feels like I am relying on pure luck to ensure that I don't somehow repeat the same action I took previously that caused the problem in the first place.

I don't like being in the dark about what's going on with my devices; it's one of the reasons I chose a Symbian phone to begin with instead of Windows Mobile. I wanted to avoid the standard Windows experience of finding my machine and its behaviour a total mystery to me. But I suppose there is no getting away from that with any technology.

With Nokias recent V3 FW history I think we are all at the mercy of the coin flip....in fact, many FW updates fix some known problems only to cause problems not present before....happened to my E50 recently

Wish I knew the true answer......

Eeeeeeeeeeeeeek, I just realized this but... does doing a hard reset change the FIRMWARE back to the original factory version? You have to upgrade that all over again too????

no u will keep the fw that your phone last have. Like greenteeth said, i think u should start fresh for your browser since its obvious that the problems are in your settings.

unless u do something stupid like the phone running out of battery/pulling out the cable during flash/com crash, u'll be fine

NOTE: i m NOT responible if something happens to your phone...gotta put that down -_-*

OK STOP, I HAVE YOUR SOLUTION RIGHT HERE:

I say this only after having experienced something very similar. After pocking around for a few minutes, I luckily stumbled on the solution. The problem lies in the fact that your history (as someone correctly noted above) is somehow corrupted.

Here is what you do. Open Ybrowser or similar program. Go to C: drive, delete the CONTENTS (not the actual folder) CACHE folder. At least I'm 99.9% sure that's the one. Possibly restart the phone after that. You should be in business.

Good luck.

Btw, under no circumstances should a format of the phone somehow get you back to an older version of the firmware.

Thanks for all the continued help from all three of you, I am truly very grateful... I am going to restore from the memory card and try K.Alexander's solution to see if that fixes the problem. At the very least I am curious to see whether the history cache is the culprit, for my own knowledge and peace of mind. If that works, from there I'll decide about the intrinsic benefots of starting fresh and/or upgrading firmware versions.

More to come shortly...

Hmm.. I went into the c:\cache\ folder and there were only two files there. Something like index.dat and index_op.dat I deleted them both and restarted the phone, but the browser still refuses to open. Did I miss something? Should there have been more files? I used SExplorer rather than Y-browser. Does that matter?

Sorry, I was sure that would help you, like I said it did the trick for me.

Did you try maybe starting the Services browser and seeing if clearing the cache there would help.

Wish you luck. I guess worst case scenario is just reformat and reinstall everything from scratch. Make sure you sync with whatever PC/Mac you sync with first to get your contacts/calendar backed up.
