Please help! Doctors don't know what's wrong

Hi, I'm James

I have felt terrible for the past three months solid. I am 23, I have bad palpitations and my heat races extremely fast. However these symptoms only occur when I try to exert myself. I'm fine during rest. I also have bad dizziness and have lost over 10lbs. I startle very easily, and I am intolerant of heat. Often times I have difficulty swallowing and breathing as well as sound hypersensitivity. High pitch noises drive me nuts now. These are my worst symptoms.

I have been having them since february and have seen doctors for heart, ears and regular family doctors. I had a stress test and doc said that my heart did excellerate too fast, but there were no arrythmias, so he didn't really care that I can't do anything without my heart flying and beating out of my chest. All my tests keep coming back negative and my last dr. checked my thyroid and said he felt no nodules and then the bloodtest came back normal. I was for sure I had a thyroid problem, even though I'm a man, because of all the symptoms and my mom, grandmother had hyperthyroidism.

So I guess my question is, could it be thyroid related even though the test came back negative? My last dr. said he would redo the test, but he didn't know where to go from there if it was negative. The only thing I could think of was that I had a very hard fall playing basketball and landed on my right side and back area near my kidney about a week and a half before my symptoms started. I don't know if that could be a factor because I don't know what I could have damaged then. Thanks in advance for any help. I appreciate it.

When I started reading your post I though thyroid related even before you mentioned it. You have a family history and quite a few thyroid symptoms. The first thing you need to do is get a copy of all your lab work. I have found that you cannot go by a doctor telling you "everything's normal". Just because a test falls in a lab range doesn't necessarily mean it is normal. If the doctor is willing to recheck thyroid levels, let him do it and request thyroid antibodies be checked as well as TSH, free T3 and T4. Ask him to check your Vit. D and B12 levels also. But first, call and get a copy of what has already been checked and post those levels with lab ranges.

Hey James-
I know it's very concerning and disheartening to be having obvious symptoms and not be able to get any kind of answers from your doctors.

Yes, it might be a good idea to see a urologist to check your kidney function just to insure you didn't cause trauma when you fell.

My first suggestion at this point would be to get your medical records as kitty suggested. I would then make an appointment to see and endochrinologist and have them run some tests. Make sure you can give him/her copies of the tests that have been run thus far.

You might also want to maybe look into the possibility of an anxiety disorder as well. Even if you have not had prior issues with anxiety, these things can develope, so keep that in the back of your mind as well.

First though, again I highly recommend you see an endochrinologist. Best of luck to you!

James,

Does your mother see an endocrinologist for her condition? If she does, try seeing her doctor. If not, then seek out an endocrinolgist to have the thyroid issue researched. I would also suggest that you seek out another cardiologist who is proficient in electrophysiology if the thyroid issue proves negative.
