Please give me Advice on buying a 1098s

I had a Tricolore with the full system installed at purchase (July '07) and had no issues at all with the bike. I sold it 10 months later because I preferred my MV Agusta. After that MV had it's second cracked radiator (each time spending a month in the shop), I traded it in for an 1198 (back in April '09) and have had zero problems with the 1198 - which is still on the stock exhaust system. My only complaint is the stock gearing is too tall which a 14T drive sprocket can cure.

As for service prices, call around. Prices vary from area to area.

Hey, thanks for the reply. Did you notice all these issues or did you get a recall letter for the less obvious recalls?
Just when i'm ready to pull the trigger on one..i start really thinking about it & end up back where i started. I'm not patient with these types of things so i'll be sure to inspect it closely. Thanks for the tips/ advice sir[/quote]

Headlight fairing replaced before delivery. Tank and fuel leak noticed on delivery day. Airbox leaks noticed when adjusting fork height, fixed myself with foam tape. Rear shock revalved after reaching limits of stock adjustment (much better).

So don't be put off, but some patience may be required. Happiness is mostly victory.

Mrinflux, this was Exactly the type of advice i needed. everything you said makes makes perfect sense and couldn't agree more...you just sold me. i've been looking for a 1098s with Full Termi just becasue of the look/sound..read some threads here where guys debated Slip vs Full and was lead to think it's not that all that important. however the more i read and thought about it i began to see the importance of the Full exhaust. On a used bike the Full Termi'$ is a huge savings vs adding it later.

i didn't know the Full Exhaust doesn't have a cat..why is this?

You've been so helpful, thank you!

Good day, I have to agree the MV is a beautiful bike. How would you rate the Tri vs 1198? how much better is the power of the 1198 vs the 1098s ohlins? etc.

ah yes, patience really is key. lucky you caught the fuel leak when you did...that could have been messy. inspecting the airbox would be the first thing i'd do. thanks for the imput. learning so much, i love this place!

I'm sure ot miss something vital. Could anyone direct me to a check list of what to check on a new or used 1098s/1198? havn't found any threads on this.

I found the Ohlins was a little too stiff for the canyon roads I was riding. Also, since I wasn't tracking the bike or riding anywhere near 10th/10th, I felt like I didn

The cats are in the E3 compliant mufflers (OEM) so not necessarily full exhaust. You only need to change the cans to an aftermarket 'race' can to get rid of the cats.

'07 1098s here...

1st was fuel leak, but that was a simple problem to fix /w new 0-ing.

2nd was sprocket recall, that was easy too.

3rd was voltage regulator...

4th, most recently this past september was connecting rod bearing after 16000 km's Thank God for Ever Red...it's paid itself twice over on that one..

If I had known the above was going to happen before buying, I probably wouldn't have... but now that I have her, I'm glad I did. She's one beautiful bike...

haha, ain't that the truth!
i'm a wary consumer..everything i buy i ensure i get max out of it, so i'll be patient till the right bike w/upgrades comes along. don't mind paying a bunch but i need a bunch in return, ya know

right on, you did well by the sounds of it! i hear about the ohlins being really stiff and tough to setup. i'm worried if i don't S i'll regret it... want to keep this bike till the wheels come off. Also the 14T is a must i hear. I know for sure i don't "need" 1198..heck my 636 is plenty fast & friends R1 is scary fast.

Oh gotcha, thanks for clearing that up for me. So are the Full Termi at 102db track only? i hear both y/n..will cops shit on me?

Is Ever Red avail for second owners aswell? sorry to hear about all the issues but as you said she's a beauty. keeping mine till her end so i need to start with an excellent bike and work on making it perfect.

done and done! now it's alll about character.

Tommi,

The Full Termis are fine for street and track use. I've been running mine since day one, with the baffles removed, and nobody has ever complained. It's not unreasonably loud.
