Please explain...HD channels lacking

By the way, the following Wikipedia links provide good channel lists for Bell TV and Star Choice.
 
Is there a running total posted somewhere? Is Rogers 1 or 2 HD channels behind Bell, or 20?

A chart with all the HD channels avail in Canada, with columns showing which provider offered which ones would be nice (perhaps the cell listing the date they started offering the channel). Is there one?
 
Boy, you're not alone in that observation. But it's not Bell holding it up: Space is currently owned by CTVglobemedia -- the same folks who, apparently, can't be bothered to invest in even a single HD camera for Lloyd Robertson. Why the heck isn't Canada AM in HD, either?
 
OTOH, Rogers (which you can't get in Montreal), does deliver OMNI 1, OMNI 2, SUN TV (aka Toronto One), TLC, Speed, CNN and a whack of HD content On Demand (like HBO Canada HD On Demand). Bell is a national service; Rogers is a regional player and needs to deliver programming which is relevant to its core base -- it could be argued duplicate/timeshifting of CBC, CTV, Global, PBS is a nice to have but when more than 50% of Toronto residents weren't born in Canada, OMNI 1 and OMNI 2 probably serve a deeper need.

That said, as technology makes more bandwidth available, it would be nice to have as diverse and complete a palette of programmers as possible in HD.

I was at a friends house, who subs to Rogers HD, and was disappointed in how much Ondemand programming was available...He said it is frustrating because the majority of the ondemand programming, you have to pay/subscribe to... From what I saw, Ondemand was just PPV, unless you already paid for the channels....
These numbers can be misleading, as others have mentioned, many channels arent available (MC for east subscribers, or French HD, if you don't speak French)

The lack of Encore Avenue HD is the one that frusturates me the most...lots of great older movies are now airing that I would love to see in HD.
 
Do you think we'll ever see the day when *all* channels are HD and no one broadcasts in SD anymore? And then all new programming is shot only in HD? Kinda like when colour TV was introduced, it only took a few years before everyone abandoned black & white and everything was in colour.
 
I'm sure it's possible, but not soon. Maybe at least 10 more years. More probable to happen if it's 20 years. Keep in mind that to enjoy HD, you'll need an HD capable television (LCD or Plasma).

For massive HD adaptation, everyone would need to have upgraded their TVs from your good old CRT TVs and subscrbing to HD content (either through satellite/cable/OTH) is equal (or cheaper) than SD content.

Now the better question is would we ever get our flying cars? Cause I freakin' want one and it's the 21st century already! But I digress ...
 
Channels can broadcast HD and regular TVs can show the (downconverted) image, especially since analogue broadcasting is ending in the US in 2009 and Canada in 2011 (most channels). Lots of people already have HD STBs connected to SDTVs.

Nevertheless, there is a lot of SD programming in the archives that will be broadcast on a lot of channels for some time to come.
 
Didn't Bell used to have 2 Movie Central HD channels?
If so, why on earth would they drop one?

I dropped the movies options over the summer, but I seem to remember MCHD1 and MCHD2 and now there is only one, or am I mistaken?
 
Do a search for the HBO Canada thread. One of those channels became HBO HD.

RE: Color being adopted quickly:

Color (official spelling) was first broadcast in the United States in 1955 (Rose Bowl/Parade I believe), full color prime time on NBC only began in 1964 (remember My Mother The Car?). Other networks such as CBS and ABC were very slow to adopt color. Canada began some color broadcasting in 1967 (for the centennial). It was the 80's before everything including almost all commercials were in color. Black and white sets using picture tubes were still being sold up to a couple of years ago.

Compared to that HD is moving in much faster. However, there is a long way to go. The situation is not being helped by the CRTC (delaying Canada's analogue cutoff to 2011) and the FCC (actually giving people grants to buy digital converters to prolong the life of old style sets) who are letting the whole issue drag out over far too many years.
