Hi,
as the attack was carried out by a "splinter group" of the Provisional Irish Republican Army, the attack was condemmned by Gerry Adams. Adams condemmed both the attack itself and the RIRA who carried out the attack.
29 people died in the attack and both Sinn Fein and the Unionist parties were appalled at the amount of innocent civillian lives lost.
Initially Martin McGuiness, Party Leader of Sinn Fein refused to cooperate in an investigation into the attack, citing the involvement of the RUC. he stated that if an independent international inquiry were to be set up, his party would fully co-operate.
A short while after the attack on the 22 August representatives of the PIRA visited the houses of those involved with the RIRA and told them to disarm and disband, as their actions were delaying and complicating the peace process.
