I am 16 years old and I started painting this about 6 months ago, got frustrated and gave up for awhile, then started again last night. I am not finished yet, it still needs a lot of work which is why i ask to be critiqued. I was painting it last night, then stepped back and realized that it was really ugly and nothing like i was hoping for...
ignore the body, it needs work (i just ignored that part for now), and the eyes, ears, mane, and nose of the horse also need major touch ups... pretty much the whole thing. I think the hardest part is matching the paint color, especially since i am running out of a color that cannot be replaced...
sorry this was long and let me know what i can do to fix it!!!
thanks

1st and 2nd: painting... 3rd: reference

This is a awesome looking painting. The tone looks well and the neck even look good to me. The eyes are realistic and the color looks right. Maybe the edges are not quite sharp enough. Is it a pastel?
I paint some as well for the last few years but you have a talent I have not reached yet. It's a good painting to finish!

Actually, I don't think it is bad at all. Sort of still life meets impression....Don't try so hard to copy a picture exactly. The only thing I didn't care for was the background color. I would have chosen a shade of blue or green, to offset the color of the horse. But that is just my personal opinion and taste.
Good work, and keep painting..you have talent.

The top link is the best. You show great talent. Ignore anyone who says wait 10-20 years.....
An artist is someone who is artistic. Many do not sell their art. It's a personal choice.
I took drawing, painting and design in college and made straight A. But I no longer have the desire to be artistic anymore. Which is a shame because it's a good outlet.

Listen, art is a matter of whole life. One painting does not make art at all. Work hard for 10 - 20 years and you will get some results, probably a few excellent results.

You are very talented and have a lot of potential, I used to be a painter too but I gave that up a while ago for some reason.
I've heard horses are one of the hardest animals to draw/paint because of the way they are build. If you want to improve your horse drawing skills, work on their proportions. To me, the necks looked a bit awkward. Try looking at actual pictures or other sketches of animals to help you get better at that
