Playstation 3 questions?

I want to buy a playstation 3 but the thing is I just want to play video games on it! Just play games, like the original playstation, can I do that... sit down with my control and play games or is there much more to it?

Is it just like a regular playstation but more advanced for people that want to fool around with its special features?
