I have a PS3 with a 40GB harddrive.
I would prefer a larger drive - but how would i go about that?
Can i do this myself? If yes, how do i copy the contents on a new drive?

Does the PS3 have any size limits as to harddrive size?

I`m pretty good with PC`s - but i tried reading the HDD on the playstation, and windows does not see anything on it.

I`d appreciate links to how-to`s if there are any.

there is a way to do that but it is a long time before it become complete and u want the 80gb right well go to gamestop i had seen a mer card for the ps3

Yes its very simple.
All you need is a 2.5" SATA laptop drive. The max size I belive is 500GB.

I don't have the link but go to you tube and type ps3 hard drive swap and watch it. As for backing your data up. You must either do it to a pc, or a external USB drive. You just go to system back up its 2nd from far left on XMB under system settings. I'm not sure how far down the list. From their its simple.

You will need an external HD to transfer the backup data as well as the rest of the game data/music/etc to the new drive. You'll have to format it to FAT32 in order for the PS3 to read it. Download a free application from download.com called CompuApps Swissknife. This will create an FAT32 partition on your external HD. Try using the external HD for a while first, you may not need to go to a bigger internal HD right away.

Any 2.5 inch laptop drive that spins at 5400 RPMs will work. Its pretty easy to do. Just Google the topic. There are many instructions on how to go about the swap. Seagate is the company that makes the HDs for the PS3 so best to go with them.
