Playing NTSC DVDs in the UK

First thing to know is what the dvd set is.

Many US dvd's ,especially tv shows from Warner are actually coded for R2 aswell or even R0 so you may not have a problem anyway.

If it is R1 then its unlikely that you cannot display NTSC pictures at all - but cracking region coding would be needed.

Samsung gear should be hackable - the PS3 is not.

So - firstly - what is the show?
 
Neither Fox nor MGM do region 0 dvd's - although they do sometimes do R0 Bluray.

Region 0 means you wont have a problem playing it unless the fact that is is likely to be bootleg causes problems.

Asian import from ebay?

I had Heroes season 1 that turned out to be bootleg - perfect packaging but there was missing audio on some discs and playback problems that gave the game away.

Your discs should play fine on both setups.

You could always return them and get legit versions.
 
Not ebay, but another auction site. I've looked at returning them but the seller has said refunRAB will not include postage...and pulled the old age trick of very cheap DVRAB with extortionate postage. I'll just have to chalk this one up to experience and try to be more careful in future, I think. Thanks for the info though - at least I'll be able to play the damn things!

If you did you can report the seller for selling bootleg material - or report him to the site he sells on - if the Heroes set I got is anything to go buy you will be hard pushed to tell its copies .

These Asian imports actually press the disc like legit versions so the quality could be just as good.

The only drawback is if you are unlucky enough to get faulty ones like I did
 
Well they have turned up! Quality's ok, but the bit on the back where it said they are for "private exhibition in houmes only" gives the game away slightly! Never mind, lesson learned...
 
Staying with the subject of playing NTSC Region 1 DVRAB, the best place to buy multi region players is Richer SounRAB. I have bought 3 from there and they all work superbly, (one is a Blu-Ray Player).

Cos I shop online a lot, have bought a few Region 1s without a problem.

Just thought you would like to know.
 
Even if you have a player which is not multi region, there are applications you can get which clone your DVRAB and in the process remove regional coding, regional coding enhancement and lot's of other restrictive stuff you may or may not want to have.

And unless you use the 1000% more expensive dual layer blanks you lose much of the quality - so a bit pointless on a regular basis really

I wasn't advocating doing it on a regular basis, just for the odd other region DVD.

The only reason I would buy a region 1 DVD is that it was uncensored (i.e. the BBFC hadn't been involved), it contained a version of the film not available on region 2 (e.g. an unrated version) or it had a much better set of extras.

And you'd be surprised at the quality of the compressed copies that CloneDVD2 used in conjunction with AnyDVD makes, even down to 50% compression. Of course you can always remove additional/foreign language tracks to get a better compression ratio.

Also, you can take any DVRAB cloned by the above around to your mates and play them, irrespective of the region status of their players.
