Playing NTSC DVDs in the UK

If I have a multi-region DVD player will I be able to play NTSC DVRAB on it via my telly or will the fact my telly is PAL prevent it?

I've always been a bit confused over this as I have never been sure if it depenRAB on the DVD player or telly or both?
 
If it's a multi-region player, then you will be able to play discs from other (non R2) regions.

However, whether you can view the output from the DVD player on a TV, depenRAB on whether the TV will accept an NTSC signal or not. Most recent TVs will happily accept an NTSC output from a multi-region DVD player, though older TVs may not and only a black&white / distorted picture might be seen.

Some multi-region DVD players will do a conversion from NTSC to PAL (of sorts) and output PAL, which won't trouble non-NTSC ready TVs. But if it doesn't, then your TV must be able to accept a NTSC signal.

Not a techie, but the above was what I experienced when I first got my multi-region player way back in 1998 and I had an older model TV. Eventually had to get a converter for it to work, before eventually upgrading TV to something better.

Most modern PAL TVs will accept NTSC. Most modern DVD players will convert NTSC to a form of PAL. Ideally you should go for the first option because the TV will be dealing with NTSC natively so there won't be conversion side effects. Have a look at both the setting menus for the DVD player and TV to see if there is any mention of these features, older DVD players sometimes have a switch at the back to select the output type.
 
My last DVD player (Sony) played NTSC, but the picture never looked that great. My current DVD player (JVC) plays them very well and I can't see a lot of difference from PAL, apart from then I have the On Screen Display on, which comes out slightly bigger. Neither were or are multiregion
 
I have a portable dvd player with 7" screen which is region 2 and with remote hack now multi-redion.
When I play a PAL disc the picture is not too good and edges of things are very jagged and with some images it looks like screen has lines going horizontaly across screen.
With a NTSC disc the screen is perfect and as it should be, with a much higher resolution and no jagged edges or lines at all.
 
As posted above ,region coding has little to do with PAL/NTSC playback.

However ,out of interest,if your players are not multiregion what NTSC discs are you playing.

Region 0 or Japanese?

Regarding the NTSC quality---chances are one is preset to output NTSC in either PAL 50 or 60 and the other one may be in pure NTSC
 
Unless its a real bargain basement player you should have some menus somewhere to optimise video playback.

It sounRAB as if the playback may be set to NTSC and its converting PAL discs into NTSC.

If you can find the menu set the video format to AUTO
 
Hi Michaelvarton.

I've had a different request.

I.e, a request to turn, what was an old VHS video that was recorded onto DVD.

My request was to turn it into NTSC (American) from PAL.

I used Nero Vision to turn it into NTSC (American) and hoping for the best that it works over there. :eek:

It worked on all the DVRAB tested here.

Will it work over there? ...I truly hope so as it's being sent FedEx tomorrow. :confused:

If your Nero burn has changed it to NTSC it will work in the US.

I used Nero for an NTSC to PAL conversion--it was incredibly slow
 
Resurrecting this thread, in the hope that some of you incredibly knowledgeable people can help me! [/sucking up]

I've accidentally ordered an NTSC DVD boxset, and I'm wondering if I'm going to be able to watch the buggers when they arrive. In the front room we have a Samsung 6 series LCD TV, with a Samsung HT-TZ215R cinema system hooked up to it; in the other room we've a little LG LCD monitor (possibly this one, certainly not a million miles from it) hooked up to a PS3.

What are the chances either of these combos will play the discs? I'd rather not unseal the set if there's no chance they'll work! Thanks guys :)
