Plant and veggie garden?

I want to plant a garden in my backyard, but I want it to be eye catching and also functioning. I would like to plant flowers and veggies. Any suggestions on where to find specific info or do any of you have knowledge on what kind of plants will compliment each other.

I was thinking maybe some giant sunflowers (I have a 6 ft. tall fence) with colorful flowers mums .. etc and maybe some lavender. I would like a small plant of tomatoes, green onion, watermelon....etc
