I haven't seen this films in years and to be honest, I've never really rated it that much, but last I decided to whip the DVD out (Christmas present :p) after a long time and my thoughts changed.

I actually found it really enjoyable, funny and very touching. It has some top moments such as "those aren't pillows", "You're going the wrong way!" and Steve Martins famous speech with the car assistant lady. :cool:

I also found John Candy's character to be so sweet and I really felt for him (I'll even admit I got slightly chocked up when Steve Martin realises his wife is dead and he's going to be spending Thanksgiving alone), he really does try his best and is far too nice.

Anyway just wanted to point out what a great little comedy it is and it's nice to finally see them both realise they are frienRAB after such a traumatic time together. Anybody else a fan? :cool:
 
I've loved this film ever since it was first released :D
I think it's one of his best.
"The Man With Two Brains" is too silly I think.
Have you seen "Bowfinger" ?

I love this movie!

But as well as all of the famous bits (the car-rental scene, the 'those are not pillows' scene etc), what strikes me with successive viewings is what a perfectly nuanced performance this was from John Candy. In fact, for me probably his best ever acting role.

Sure, at first he appears to be an annoying buffoon, but after the first viewing you start to pick up on little character touches, expressions and phrases that signpost his characters backstory.

It's a testament to Candy's acting ability that he was able to flesh out the character in such a subtle fashion, making you go from laughing at him, to feeling sorry for him, to having a huge lump in your throat at the end of the movie.
 
I first saw this film on tv the week before christmas back in 1992.I love the on screen chemistry between John Candy & Steve Martin & the film has a heartwarming ending.I'd say this is possibly John Candy's best film.
 
It is such a great film, the chemistry between them, and the scenes were magic, it was up there with my favourite double act, Laurel and Hardy.
