EAST HAVEN — A plane crashed into a house on Charter Oak Avenue this morning.
A coroner has been called to the scene, a source confirmed.
East Haven Assistant Fire Chief Chuck Licata says the pilot is missing, but crews have not found any bodies. He confirmed people were in the home at the time.
The Federal Aviation Administration has an investigator on the scene and is expecting the National Transportation Safety Board to send one as well.
According to the FAA, a Rockwell International Turbo Commander 690B, a multi-engine turbo prop aircraft, from Teterboro Airport, N.J., crashed on approach into the Tweed-New Haven Airport at 11:25 a.m.
Town officials say a plane hit one home and fuel and fire ignited a second.
A press conference is scheduled for 12:45 p.m.
The right side of one house appears completely burnt, while smoke continues to surround the building. Firefighters are on the roof with a chainsaw and extinguishing flames. Emergency crews could be seen carrying a stretcher into the home.
Dozens of emergency vehicles, including a state police car, are on the scene.
“It looks like a small plane. Except for the tail, it looks almost unrecognizable,” said Tom Holman, an ex-New Haven firefighter who helped firefighters from East Haven, New Haven and Branford at the scene. Continued...
“Two Cape Cod-style houses were fully involved when I arrived. The plane appeared to be in the back. There’s heavy, heavy damage to both houses.”
Holman had been driving on Route 1 about a mile away when he saw heavy black smoke and drove to the scene. He was assisting in setting up lines to battle the fires.
Officials at Tweed-New Haven Airport could not be reached.
Tony Brinley, who said he lives one street over at 550 Main St., said he believes the plane was attempting to land when the crash occurred. The plane was banking at a severe angle that made the wings almost perpendicular with the ground, he said.
Brinley said he had been watching planes land all morning.
“This one came from the side, he was trying to bank to turn to the airport,” Brinley said. “His wings were up and down. And then all of a sudden, boom.” Brinley said he thought the angle was too severe.
Brinley said he heard the engines as the plane approached, and then suddenly, did not.
“All of a sudden, I didn’t hear any engines,” he said. “The engines cut out before he crashed. I saw him all the way across. It was silent.”

Brinley said he could smell wood burning from the home.
