Pixar have announced that as well as Cars 2, due for release next year, they are also working on a direct-to-video spin-off called Planes.
My question is, why? Pixar's strength is the care and attention they lavish on each and every release throughout the production process which means they've never settled for anything less than excellent and have never released an unsuccessful film. Why risk all that by deciding from the outset to cut the budget and therefore the time and effort that will be out into a release in order to make it 'direct-to-video'? It's the first time I've suspected Pixar of cashing in and I wonder how much influence Disney management has had in this decision.
They are also looking to convert existing films to 3D for re-release, starting with Ratatouille! apart from that being a very odd choice IMO, this again sounRAB like Disney trying to cash in on Pixar's success pre-merger. New films in 3D I can just about live with although I won't watch them but please leave the old films alone!
