Yesterday, Johnny Depp appeared at a Disney film convention to officially announce to the crowd that "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" will be released in the summer of 2011. Still no word of what the plot may be.

Depp was welcomed with raucous applause as he sailed onstage in a pirate ship dressed as Capt. Jack Sparrow. He staggered about and embraced Walt Disney Studios Chairman Dick Cook, who announced that "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" would be released in the summer of 2011. Depp will also play Tonto in a big-screen adaptation of "The Lone Ranger," Cook said.

CotBP is one of my favourite films, ever.

DMC was good but still nowhere near as good as the first.

AWE was an absolute mess and I was so disappointed.

I can't get excited about the prospect of another Pirates film. I think they've got as much milage out of the characters that they can (Jack, especially, was largely useless in AWE) and I worry they're just milking the franchise beyond its worth now.

I love Depp and I would love to be excited about this but after AWE, I don't know if I'd even want to see another one.

Cautiously looking forward to the 4th installment, my only fears are based on a probable lack of Gore Verbinski as the director, instead we possibly have Rob Marshall (director of various musicals).

As for the existing films, I loved all of the first three, especially At World's End.

Loved Curse of the Black Pearl (saw it 4 times at the cinema). The other two I can take or leave em. Not bad, but nowhere near the first.

Yes, I can see why you'd be worried by the prospect of an Oscar-nominated director, over someone who gave us the likes of ... er ... Mousetrap. ;)

The first film was very good, and I loved the second ... but the third was truly dire.

Love the Pirates franchise so welcome any new movies they make. My fave is actually Dead Man's Chest, love all the Kraken stuff. Not sure what people will make about a Pirates film without Kiera and Orlando though.

I loved the first movie. Saw it three times in a couple of weeks when it came out, & then again however many times on DVD.

Second... indifferent to it. 'Twas OK, but nothing special.

Third... I thought it was bloody awful :(

Not fussed about a fourth...

I'm EXTREMELY happy that Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom will not be a part of the 4th film. Their story arc has been resolved so there's no reason to bring them back. And quite frankly, I found their characters to be plain dull in the last 2 films. At times it seems that Jack Sparrow was a secondary character to them.

The second and third movies were uttter rubbish. I sold them as soon as i could and they are the worst sequels i have seen in my life so far.

But i will check this out because it's Jack after all and new characters and storylines.

I agree to an extent - but the use of character actors as main stars still set it apart from 'The Matrix' and a million other summer blockbuster crap. The first was superb, if it had the sweep and scope and money of its brothers it would have been something very special.
As for the sequels, odd, rambling, on-the-hop plots didn't detract that these were like slicker versions of modern historical Gilliam fantasies. Plus they nicked the Davey Jones plot from a Neil Gaiman novel - other than that, there were no other mainstream movies out there like them and I still love them.

That will probably be one of the good things about it.

The Will and Elizabeth characters have nowhere else to go. Their story has been told.

I would be far more open to the idea of new characters going on new adventures than former characters returning and everything being hashed out again.

I am looking forward to this. :)

I am one of the few who really enjoyed the sequels (still love the first the most though!) and I hope that this new one is good too. I, personally, am glad that Keira and Orlando won't be in this one - what exactly could they do with them now anyway?
Will took over command of the Flying Dutchman and can't set foot on land for ten years - there wouldn't be much of a story there!

Anyway, I'm looking forward to the plot being revealed! I just hope that they don't rely too heavily on CGI this time around. I loved the sequels, like I said before, but I still get the feeling that they focused too much attention onto the CGI rather than working out the plots a bit better.

The sequels were obviously about being "bigger, bigger, BIGGER" and to hell with whether the storyline and characterisations made sense anymore.

I love how understated CotBP is. It's charming. DMC wasn't so bad but there is something really obnoxious about AWE. It seemed to become all about showing off and milking it in the end.

I hope "On Stranger Tides" will see a return to the story being more important than the flashy effects.

im glad they're making a fourth, i loved the previous 3 but i agree CotBP was the best, if geffory rush isnt in this film then i wont even bother to watch this film, barbossa and jack sparrow are the only characters ive like in the series:)
