Pipe audio through bluetooth

I'd like to listen to podcasts using my bluetooth headset, even if its just mono. The audio player doesnt seem to play music over the headset when its paired, just on the speaker.

Is there a way to pipe the audio through bluetooth at the api level maybe?
 
I bet it's possible. You would have to write an app that mimics a phone call but actually outputs music.

When I end a phone call and the phone reverts back to the music player, I often get a couple of seconds of music before the phone switches to the speaker.

The quality's crap, but probably good enough for an audio book.

So... it's technically possible, but it may cause undesirable effects when you implements it (like the phone thinking it's in a call and bouncing genuine incoming calls).

Bluetooth A2DP isn't yet supported by the android OS. google are implementing A2DP along with a vast array of extra bits and bobs in the Cupcake update (whenever that arrives!)
 
Steve would be happy with mono. A2DP (Stereo Bluetooth) is the profile for streaming stereo 320KBps audio. Whilst we all know that A2DP is in the works, can anyone suggest whether it would be feasible to stream music via the same mechanism used for calls?

Or, would this only be achievable via a hack that would compromise incoming calls?
 
Addressing the concern on the feasibility of sending mono audio over Bluetooth.It is definitely possible.Looks like down sampling is not supported (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Downsampling) on G1, hence they send all non 'Call' related audio to the phone speaker.

If the technique was supported by default or someone wants to put it in,we could listen to any audio - in Mono quality.We would definitely need Cupcake for Stereo quality sound.Hope this information helps!
 
is this possible with 1.5 and a standard (monaural) bluetooth headset? i'd like to use it for podcasts/audiobooks.

notification sounds would be nice also.
 
None of my mono headsets will broadcast music. There's not even an option for it when you longpress the unit in the bluetooth connection menu. So, no, as the G1 is now, i'd say you can't.
 
It's too bad. MS Mobile phones have had this capability for years. Unfortunately it seems now whenever it gets mentioned people have a hard time getting their head around the fact that we aren't talking about A2DP.

I'd love to see the G1 get what my old smartphone had. A program to toggle all audio to bluetooth headset. It's great for streaming talk radio, audio books, etc; anything where you don't care about the sound quality being low.

I have a GPS with Bluetooth capabilities. My G1 and GPS work great as a speaker phone, but I also want to listen to music through my GPS. For some reason this does not work. I have the cupcake update installed. I assume my problem is because the GPS is mono? Does anyone know a way to work around this?
 
It's kinda hard to tell, but I think what you're trying to do can be rememdied if you go into the phones bluetooth option, longpress on the GPS and then select option, then check the box that says media.
 
Just got my HTC Hero with Sprint.
I noticed that I don't get the notifications through the bluetooth when I get an email/text. I can play music over it and it is recognized as a stero headset. would like to be able to get the notifications if possible.
 
With v1.5, I had music streaming through my mono bluetooth headset. By dialing one of the special dialing characters "w" or "p" ("***" or "**"), my Eris opened a connection with my headset without placing the call. I was then able to play music, either streaming over the web or an mp3 player, until a call came in. The phone would override the music until the call was completed - just like it does when playing music over the speaker. It was sometimes a little quirky to get it to reestablish the bluetooth connection, but while it worked, it was wonderful.

Now, 2.1 is too smart to establish the bluetooth connection until after the call is established. I'm bumming! I can't find a way to go back to 1.5 either.

HTC tech support said that it's a software setting that restricts playing music through anything not stereo. If we could locate it, I would think we could create a work-around fairly easily. As I've never programmed unix or hacked my Eris (yet), anyone know how to proceed? People are ready and willing to pay for this fix!!
