Pink Panther DVD Box Set weirdness

About a month ago I decided I just had to have all the Pink Panther films, so I looked for a box set. It turned out there were two: one that had five of the films but missed out The Return Of The Pink Panther, and one that had all six movies. The one with the full set was due for release on 27th February 2006.

So today I set about ordering the new Pink Panther Film Collection, and found that all the usual online suppliers were describing it as including five films. Poked around a bit more and a couple of suppliers are saying that the version with six films is no longer available, one company is even describing this product as "deleted, release date 27/02/2006"!

So, anyone know how and why a box set that hasn't been released yet has already been deleted?

I have seen it for sale on Amazon and it says nothing about it being withdrawn (yet).

If it is being withdrawn, I can only think it might be due to copyright issues or perhaps to do with a feature or audio commentary not being given clearance by the BBFC - the first Rocky box set had to be withdrawn due to a problem with the audio commentary having a swear word, hence why the box set got a 12 rating.

I wonder if that's the reason - are the rights to Return Of The Pink Panther owned by someone who's holding up the release? I looked it up on the BBFC site and the Return... was last submitted in January by Universal Pictures. The others were submitted by MGM Home Entertainment or 20th Century Fox.

If you look at the pack shot of the one on Amazon you can see that it's the old, five-film box set not the new, six-film one. Unless they're using an old photo that suggests the new edition has been withdrawn. But it definitely existed a few weeks ago - have Universal thrown a spanner in the works?

yes i have the box set you linked to on Amazon.. it is missing one of the films and as you say seems to be because someone else has the rights to it

Inkblot, my fiance had the same problem. The return of the pink panther was never released in the box-set and thats what they said about the rights. My fiance bought a very good quality copy of the DVD on ebay, you could try there, I checked and there are a lot for sale.
Hope you find a copy!
