Hi All, I,m considering trying pilates to help with my lower back pain. I,m thinking of trying a reformer under instruction. Has anyone had any success with pilates?

I have done pilates for 4 or 5 years. I also have s curve scoliosis and two years ago I underwent a spinal fusion of most of my vertebrae. Pilates is incredible, it completely changed my body and my life. If you are serious about it will fundamentally change how you walk sit, and perform everyday movements. However, I'm not sure how much it will aleviate your pain. If your back problems are in part caused by bad posture (which almost everyone has) it may do wonders. I would definitely suggest finding a trainer who understanRAB back problems, if that is an option. You should also check out the following books: Pilates for Fragile Backs and The Ultimate Pilates Body Challenge. The latter offers great suggestions on how to do everything with optimal posture, from watching tv to standing in line to making copies. Just make sure that you listen to your body and don't do anything that causes sharp pain. Let us know how it works for you!

I have been in a pilates classes (reformer and mat) and if the trainers are good they will make sure the exercises you perform will not be too much for your back. Typically you are required to have at least one private session first and this will give you an indication what what your body can do. AfterwarRAB, you'll be placed in a beginner class and the trainer should urge each person to work at their own ability and pace. Although I do not have back issues, I've had problems with my neck and was just diagnosed with a ruptured disc. And I do plan to go back to class once my body is able. I actually think it's the perfect exercise for someone to get back into the swing of thngs :)

I have been thinking about trying Pilates myself. I know my pain won't be relieved by it, but I am hoping it might help me lose weight somehow, being nothing else helps. I'm thinking I might actually be able to do this as exercise, since I cannot do anything else.

I do not want to go to a class or trainer, though. I don't have much time, plus don't want to pay monthy gym fees again (that I might never get out of). However, I did see a few pilates machines for home use. They really look like I would be able to use them. I'm hoping some of the exercises on the machine would be enough to get my heart rate up.
