picture quality

Would someone else watching the NHL games last night be able to tell me if they thought the picture was quite dark on both broadcasts, more so on the Ducks/Wings game. I found the picture to be a little too dark.

I watched on Centre Ice and the picture looked fine to me, no macroblocking. I find the HD and even the SD picture has improved since Bell upgraded to 8psk.

Sometimes I wonder if the differences in our quality experiences can come from the different TV models and how they are set up. Can anybody comment on that?

Most customers probably have their receiver set to 480p and are watching on a Dynex 32" LCD TV too. Ignorance is bliss.

what would be the use anyway? your getting your TV to upconvert a lower resolution. it would be just like converting a DVD which is originally 480i to 1080p. it will either make you notice a little improvment or may make it look worse

Bell TV does dynamic compression. That is to say they turn down the compression for Hockey Night in Canada and other shows with higher ratings to improve PQ. They also turn down compression on the Eastern Time Zone channels during eastern prime time, and do the same for Pacific Time Zone in their prime time. Needless to say PQ for lesser rated shows and shows in the wrong time zone at the wrong time suffer.

I've noticed the macroblocking as well as well as a really soft picture and the low signal Bell is sending being unable to be displayed properly (look at a line in the background, sometimes there is really bad flickering in the lines, both SD and HD). However, this can not be attributed to the switch to 8PSK as nothing has switched over yet, unfortunately.

I've even started to notice CBCHD getting worse as time goes on. It's no longer being broadcasted by bell at 1080i and it's sharing trasponder space with TLCHD. I can notice easily macroblocking on HNIC and it's not as detailed as it used to be. Lots of artifacts in the Canucks/Oilers game Saturday.

I have to ask, but does anyone else constantly see motion artifacts on their HD and SD channels or is it just me? What I'm referring to is when there is motion, you can see blocks of artifacts in the background, especially in dark parts of the picture and this is noticeable on SD and HD no matter what channel. As I mentioned earlier, I saw my brother's HD service this weekend (Sasktel Max) and the picture was flawless. Even the SD TV in the house can show these artifacts. Also, do people find the picture on Bell HD to be a little dark, or is that just the whole plasma tv thing. Also, these artifacts are not noticeable on PS3 or BluRay, so it seems like a Bell issue, also noticeable when the picture is frozen and the spots freeze and are still visable. Anyone else notice these?

Oh how true.

You would not believe the number of 6131/6141 and 9242/9241 models left on 480, it is astounding.

I don't know if it's in the water but the last 8 hrs bell hd has looked better than good, The habs game was so good my wife noticed me watching the game and said "why don't my channels come in like that". We switched around and all was good, even the guide looked sharper than before. I hope this is whats to come april 1.

Finally, you guys are actually stating what I've been screaming about on this forum for the last year and a half, that BEV PQ is not consistent at all. In fact, the PQ has deteriorated to the point that some Hd channels look like up-converted SD.

Like many of you have stated, I will give BEV a little more time until this 8PSK switch occurs, or MPEG4. However, if this does not happen soon I TOO WILL BE GOING WITH ANOTHER CABLE/SAT PROVIDER.
BEV is right about one thing........... you can "Get the most Hd with Bell" not the BEST HD! big difference. I hope this thread reaches some BEV executives!!

TSN has always looked sharp for me. NBCHW looked soft tonight like it has for the last few months.

Ok, just when I thought BEV was on the right track in terms of PQ..... last night's American Idol & Fringe were no where near in PQ to what they have been in the past.
I don't know if this has anything to do with the CTV simsub of the programs or what.... but the PQ was not up to par!! Fringe was some what bearable to watch but American Idol was just full of compression artifacts and macrobloking.

Anyone else notice this?

Paul

If the guide is clearer, then that sounds like something changed with your cables/TV. I'm pretty sure the guide is rendered by the receiver, not transmitted as a graphic by Bell....
