picture quality

This seems to happen when an other channel on the same transponder needs sudently more bandwith.

Just mearly pointing out that I was superised that someone with experience found the quality good....and it has nothing to do with this forumn.
And yes...experience counts. I have seen some people that can't tell the diff between HD and SD, or using coax vs HDMI.

Don't be so quick to jump.....relax

I have to admit that while watching House on Global HD (ON) last night, I did notice something different about the picture. It did seem sharper than what I'm used to. So far this season, Global hasn't been too bad.

On the other hand, I've been recording Hero's on NBC West HD, due to some scheduling conflicts. The picture quality has been terrible (macro-blocking has been really bad). I haven't watched Monday's episode yet. If it's bad, I'm going to switch to recording the 10:00 pm episode on Global instead.

The 9242 wouldn't I think just effect 8 channels only while leaving the rest looking fine .
And I believe I mentioned before about having access to 9242's & 9241's in another thread with the same results on calibrated sets. If anything I think the DSR530 does a poorer job outputting video than the Bell PVR's. I think its just a bandwidth issue on those channels....." Please Sir Bell may I have some more "

Back to the computer as Habs vrs Ottawa game looks like crap, Is it supposed to be in HD?

I Pre-Ordered TNA Wrestling: Lockdown in HDTonight so i can be ready to watch it tomorrow night. Havent ordered HD wrestling on PPV since last year. Anyone comment on the HD PPV quality? Last time i ordered was Wrestlemania 24 and the PQ was pretty good from what i remember. Anyone order any HD wrestling recently? Care to comment on the PQ? Thanks in Advanced!

That really sucks we wont see an improvement on the American Superstations. Those are the station that need the most improvement!!

You likely have a ground loop problem. Something in your system - like your coax feed to the STB or one of your components is not properly grounded. Search this forum for "ground loop" and you'll find several previous threads on the topic.

Thanks for catching that rsambuca. I wasn't thinking when I typed in my last sentence. It's amazing that they can actually lower the bitrate and get better picture quality. I understand that in the US, Dish Network (Bell's big brother) had a lot of complaints when they went to HD lite, but when they switched over to MPEG4, the HD quality got a lot better. So the picture on Bell may get better with MPEG4.

Here is an example how bad the HD quality (on some channels) is on Bell right now: When I record a one hour show on CityHD, it takes up 1 hour on the hard drive and the show looks very sharp. When I record a one hour show on NBCHW (which looks very soft), it takes up only 37 minutes on the hard drive. Obviously they are compressing the heck out of NBCHW and not so much CityHD. I am going to record a one hour show on TSNHD and SportsnetHD to compare.

Is there somewhere on the net where we can look up how many HD channels are on each transponder and the individual bitrates for each HD channel?

After hooking everything back up this is my conclusion too. The detail is higher on most of shaw's HD channels but the macroblocking is worse. I guess it all comes down to what your eyes like best.

Bell has been given the name compressvu for a reason, basically history repeats itself, the SD was ok when Bell first launched there satellite service, then it was so bad that many could not stand it, the HD is no different, they started putting HD on it was ok, then boom it's getting bad and will get worse.

I was talking strictly HD though, are the HD American Superstations also on the 91 satelite?

If you have a shared Dish then your using a Stacked Feed from the Roof to each unit. At each TV there will be a de-stacker to bring the frquencies back to a level the receiver can handle. There should not be any kind of "Booster Box" in your suite, that would be in a panel/closet in the building. I think what you see is the de-stacker.

What do you mean by ?

If it is the de-stacker, this is how it works, by going from that unit to the Receiver then from the receiver to the TV. There is a second output from the de-stacker that carries OTA signals that can be connected directly to the TV's coax input, for OTA signals.

For those of you saying RushHD is just OK, you must have very detailed vision because these channels are the best HD probally from any providor i've seen around quebec.

I never knew of re-encoding being done in real time> Since you stated it changes regardless of it being the same program, then that is why there can be changes in consistency on some channels and broadcasts from time to time.

Is there a reson to re-encode in real time as compared to just sending a decent quality signal.

Also, I understand Bell has been talking about Mpeg4 capability with the newer boxes 9142 etc> Is this only for HD programming? Or could be be availble for SD prgraming as well> I would think it would mostly benefit the later.

What's really sad is that the CRTC has format and quality requirements in their digital TV regulations, yet they do nothing when a distributor like Bell flagrantly defies the requirements by transcoding channels and reducing their bit rate.

What new System?

BTV sends all channels as 720P, not 780P. Your post was moved to this thread.

Suggest you stick with Cogeco unless you have some other specific reason to switch.

I can overlook macroblocking on fast scenes which are usually short in duration, but it is hard to overlook blurry images on static scenes which last for minutes at a time. I tend to watch TSNHD and SNHD on Bell for sports, and TV shows/movies with Shaw. Even though HD is a big improvement over SD, HD is not perfect with any provider.

I've got both of mine (9241 & 9242) set at 1080i. Both are plugged into my Denon Receiver which then directs the feed into my Pioneer Elite plasma. Until I finish watching all of the recordings on the 9241 I'm leaving it in the living room connected to the same exact system. The HDMI on the 9242 is very bright. Black looks more like gray, and it's blotchy. Sort of looks over-compressed. I don't see this at all with the 9241. Maybe I've got a bad 9242, but it is brand new.

I'll try the 720p to see if it makes a difference. When Bell installed my 9241 the guy set it to 1080i which is why I set the 9242 to 1080i.

They are using SD equipment for the English feed. It seems anytime there are 3 games on CBC in the same day the afternoon game will be braodcast in SD. At least this has been the norm this season.
