I think it's hard for people to say the right thing.
I have a friend whose boyfriend broke up with her for the crappiest reason ever (apparently, "God" doesn't want him to be serious about my friend right now). I want to tell her how sorry I am and that guys are all idiots anyway, but I don't really dare. She's putting on a smile for everyone and I feel like she's trying so hard to act normal that it would be rude of me to burst her bubble.
Maybe that's how people feel about people who are depressed? They're helpless, too
ETA: Don't get me wrong, if you feel you don't want to commit, then that's fine. But own up to it. Don't go telling your girlfriend of four years who kept travelling from Europe to the States during her holidays for you and was making plans for the future and whom you were going to make your wife that all of a sudden, God doesn't want you to date. That's lame and most likely an excuse.
