Picnic at Hanging Rock

I watched this film the other night and found it enjoyable, but I have a question about the ending. Did the headmistress know about Sara's death before the gardener told her? I have searched for a relevant thread but couldn't find one.

It's left for you to decide, Dan. Like many other elements in the film, it is cloaked in ambiguity.

Although this film was accorded virtually immediate critical acclaim, it did not initially go down well with US audiences because of the lack of resolution in its ending.

Thanks for the replies. I've also seen that there was a cut scene that might have made the current ending a bit less confusing and there was an alternative ending filmed as well.
Rachel Roberts' character collecting stuff from Sara's room, before her body was found. Later going back to the rock and seeing Sara's ghost, before falling to her death.

And the removed chapter ties up what happened to the missing people nicely.

Also, sorry, I didn't put my OP in a spoiler tag. I didn't think until it was too late to edit. As usual. :D

I thought that the author was advised by her publisher to remove the last chapter to maintain the air of mystery?

Whatever, a truly great film. A bit long-winded in places, but a nice creepy atmosphere which is heightened by the soundtrack.

I'm not sure of the full details, all I know is there was an extra chapter that was removed before publication, probably it as suggested by the publisher.
