Piano pedal question?

I am teaching myself piano and while I was playing something in front of someone that was pretty good and they said that i needed to keep my fingers on the keys even while i was using the pedal. Like the pedal was sustaining the notes so i could take my fingers of the keys but they said I shouldn't. The only reason for that I can imagine is if you have to lift off the pedal at some point during the duration of the note yet you want the note to still sound, then obviously you should keep you finger on it. But there was no pedal change. So why did they say that? were they just mistaken?
