Darren is floating in space. His mass with his life support system is 240 kg. He wants to return to his ship so he throws with a force of 10 N his trusty tool kit that has a mass of 2 kg.

a. What is the acceleration of the tool kit while Darren is throwing it?
b. What is the force on Darren? (Explain how you arrived at the answer)
c. What is his acceleration while throwing the tool kit?

a) F = m x a
=>10 = 2 x a
=>a = 10/2 = 5 m/s^2

b) F12 = F21 = 10 N

c)F = m x a
=> 10 = (240 - 2) x a
=>a = 10/238 = 4.2 x 10^-2 m/s^2

a. f=ma divide the force by the mass to get the acceleration
b. 10N because of newtons third law for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.
c. divide the 10n by the astronauts mass to get the acceleration.
