A 1200 kg car moving at 12.4 m/s coasts down the road slowing to 10.1 m/s due to friction. The car travels 12m while coasting. What is the force of friction acting on the car? I have the answer written down but when I am doing the problem I keep getting a different answer. I really need help its for my a review problem for my final.

Sounds like we just need to find acceleration of the car:

v2^2 = v1^2 + 2ad
a = (v2^2 - v1^2) / 2d
a = (10.1^2 - 12.4^2) / 2(12)
a = -2.15625 m/s^2

This makes sense since the car is slowing down due to friction only, now find force:

F = ma
F = 1200(-2.15625)
F = -2587.5 N

Therefore, force of friction = -2587.5 N.

Hope this is right, good luck!
