Physical changes to expect in the first 6-8 weeks of starting an exercise program?

23 days ago I started a daily exercise program. At this time it primarily consists of 45 minutes a day on an elliptical machine. I am pushing myself harder each day by either upping the resistance or going at a faster pace. I've recently started adding crunches at night before bed and I'm trying to include more and more stretching.

At the same time I have completely eliminated sweetened drinks - I primarily drink water, but do drink some diet soda. I have also eliminated most fast food (probably no more than once a week now) and virtually all candy and sweets. I am also trying to keep my total calories to less than 1500 per day.

So far I have dropped about 12 pounds. I haven't been accurately measuring my heart rate while working out, but the sensor on the elliptical will usually read about 155. Within about 15 minutes after working out my heart rate is down to about 100, but my resting heart rate hasn't gone below about 80.

I am 38, 5'11 and currently weigh about 215. When I started working out I was just above 225, which was down from a high of about 240 as recently as 4-5 months ago.

I'm just looking for any input about what kind of fitness benchmarks I should see within the first two months or so.
