[PHP] whats are benefits of using "session cookies"?

like this one:
$_COOKIE[session_name()]
and why would i even use it, i'm little bit confused :/
i'm not asking about the sessions only or cookies only..my question is about the $_COOKIES[session_name()]
i need to know what will this peace of code do for me..
