PHP script: what does -> mean or do?

I'm trying to learn PHP. I'm at the beginning. What exactly does -> do or mean? As in $Record->get_field() etc. Searching online is impossible because the characters are ignored. The more plain english the answer the better so I can understand how and when to use it. Thanks!
