php - how do I use the alter command on this?

So I have a table that has a column with a TEXT type... I'm using this type since I'm saving comments... But the amount of characters are not enough, so I want to change it to LONGTEXT.... does any body knows how to do that? also if I run the 'alter' command, will that erase my information?
