photoshop won't open my file?

Hi, so i was working in photoshop, cs3 i think, not really sure.
but then the power went out, i had already saved my file but now each time I try to open it a little message pops up and says "could not complete your request because the file is not compatible with this version of photoshop" i really need to know how to fix this because I spent alot of time working on it, it was saved in .psd

this is the only version of photoshop I have.
..i'd like to point out that GIMP is not the same as PS i have it and i hate it.
..i'll just have to redo it
 
all PS files are .psd, doesn't matter if it's PS7.0 or PSCS (which is like 10)

did you at any point open it with another PS that could have been a higher version? have you tried viewing the picture in bridge?

did you try saving a out a test file and making sure PS would open it?

if it will open that, higher version got to it or your file might be corrupt. if you have no back-ups, it's start over time.

if it won't open the test file, your PS is messed up. try uninstall and re-install.

and I agree, GIMP may help.
 
Honestly, I'm pretty sure there's no way to recover your file.

When your power went out, the file that you were working on was somehow corrupted. The most probable explanation is that it didn't save correctly or completely. Even the slightest bit of corruption or abnormality in a file can make it inaccessible.

Sorry; you're going to have to work on your work again...
 
Unfortunately what that is saying is the file is probably corrupted and Photoshop is not recognizing it as a .psd file. There isn't much you can do when this happens.

There is one thing to try, if you haven't already: instead of clicking on the file to open it, try starting up Photoshop first, then go to File>Open and find the file, select it and click Open. Sometimes things get just a little bit messed up and you can't open the file directly but you can once you start up the program. If this is successful, I would do a Save As and rename the file. If this doesn't work, I don't think there's much you can do.

I know this isn't much help for your current problem, but for future work, do a couple of things: if editing a photo, open the file and immediately do a Save As and rename it to create a working copy.

While working on a file, whether editing a photo or creating from scratch, get in the habit of hitting Ctrl + S (Command + S on a Mac) every so often to save the file. (I did note you said you'd already saved the file.) And I would also do a Save As at various stages to create several working versions. That way if something like this happens, you will have at least one saved copy at some stage of your work, therefore not losing everything.
 
it says that because u have norton, from what ive read...

but then again..if u open up another psd, will it work?

if so, then the file ur trying to open is corrupted.
