i use photoshop to make backgrounds for websites that are faded from top to bottom or bottom to top. for this i use the blending options > gradient. the gradient i choose fades the layer. However many times i do it I can't figure out what controls whether it fades to black or fades to white!!!

its maddness. it doesnt seem to matter what the background color is, or color of a layer below the layer that gets faded. it doesnt seem to matter if there is or isnt a background or two layers or just a single layer. I cant figure it out for the life of me. but i want it to fade to transparent (or white). but there are times where it fades to black/dark and i cant figure it out. someone please help me i'm so tired of it

have you clicked the text that says gradient overlay to get to the gradien controls, from there you can click the gradient marker on the far right and make it transparent. Or why not use the gradient tool and then you have total control over the direction of the gradient.

did you check your foreground and background color? Maybe the layer style accidently changed although i doubt 'multiply' or 'darken' would change it that much. Its hard to understand or solve your problem without an image so if you can prntscrn and post it i think that would help.
