Photoshop Problem With Colours?

In Photoshop, I'm not sure what I did but when I am using the brush tool and I'm making the background red. When I go back over it with the same colour or a different colour (on the same layer) it changed colour. red over red turns to black ect ect. please if someone can help me I will be forever grateful!
 
As you know, each item in the tool palette brings up a different menu across the top.

When you select the Brush Tool, you will see several options at the top of the screen.

Set the MODE to "Normal" You may have it set to "Difference" or "Multiply"
