Photoshop noob here. Help with a gradient replacement?

Hi, so I'm creating a little art piece just for fun called heart of gold...I wanted to take a picture of the human circulatory system, extract the red and blue veins and arteries and replace them with gold and lead, respectively. I tried using the color replacement tool, but I couldn't get a decent gold when I replaced the red--it turns out too dark.

Can someone point me to some youtube videos or tutorials about replacing one type of gradient (red-purple-blue) to another one (gold-silver-lead)?

I'm totally new to photoshop, so some pointers to general good tutorial sites would be nice too--right now I'm using the straight-up documentation on the adobe website, which is okay but a little frustrating to learn from.

Thanks if you can help out.
