How do you get rid of the white box behind an image?

I've tried everything I can think of, but it just doesn't work!!

I've deleted the white box, and have the checkered background, when I still had the problem I deleted the background layer instead of just hiding it, but I still have the problem! This method has always worked for me before!

Maybe it's because I'm saving it as a JPG and using it on the internet?
I thought that might be it, but I cant save in GIF for some reason! Could I use TIFF?
I cant save in PNG either! :(

I have no idea what's going on! Photoshop's going mental!
 
take the magic wand, select the white box behind and hit delete...the box should delete..(you should see a chequered style white/grey box when its gone). Then you can do whatever you want....
