photoshop freezing when i am using the text option?

This might be that the resolution of the photo is too high?

when i am using the text option on photoshop the whole thing freezes i am using photoshop 8.0,has anybody an easy option for fixing this as i am not a whizz in a computer.thanks
it does this even on a blank backround
