i have a nikon D90, i just bought it, and i really want to light paint (painting with light), but i cant figure out what to set my camera to, to achieve this. i know how to do the painting part, but i need my camera to be set up so the shutter starts when i press the button, and stop when i press it again, after im done painting.

can someone please tell me what and how to set my camera to, im pretty sure almost all nikon digital SLR camera have close to the same set up. so if you have one and know how to do this please help me :)
thank you.
omg, i just figured it out. i just wasted points

The mode you need is "bulb".
Go to manual exposure (M) in the dial, and select "bulb" for shutter speed (past 30' exposure).
There you go.

How cool is that!!

I have experimented with the camera on a tripod, in the dark, using different colour lights and using the 30 second timer, taking multiple exposures using that feature on the cameras menu.

My camera can take up to ten of them on one image file. Yours may too.

There are many right ways to do this .. just have fun

first, put your camera on a tripod. set to manual mode.if you are using a wireless remote, set your camera shutter realease mode to 'quick response'.press and hold the release mode, turn the command dial until you saw the remote control icon.set your shutter speed to the 'bulb' setting (if in quick response mode it will appear - -, to dashes)
turn the lights off, press your remote control and start painting. once finished painting, press again the remote to record the exposure. view the outcome and if it's not good try again and again until get the best results. try also youtube, type light painting as the keywords...

first off congratulations on your camera.
Second please don't use auto mode, owning a 1200 dollar camera because of auto is just a way to show the world you have money (i hate when i see people in public with nikon d300's or nikon d90's and they use auto mode i can tell cause the flash pops)

learn your camera a little. anyhow to set it to light paint make the room pretty dark if you can't get it to dark then you have to lower your aperture thats the F/ number (f/5 f/22) meaning lower it to f/22 bigger is smaller....

This will allow less light to get in, but your bright flash light will still get through to it

then set the shutter speed to either 30 seconds. or bulb. but with bulb you need a remote (wireless is preferred)
then just take your lights stand in front of it and paint, or point them at the wall.

another trick is to do the same thing but use a flash light and shine it on yourself infront of the camera it will pick that up if you have the f kinda high like f/2.8 or f/5

mostly just experiment to set these settings go to M mode.
then rotate yoru front nob (thumb) for 30 seconds, and rotate the back nob (ring finger) for what F stop you want.

good luck and learn that expensive piece of equipment, take it everywhere. never forget it.
