If you can take good photos here, you can take good photos there.
A few things I would suggest:
1. Be sure to capture their culture. Don't just take photos of pretty things, take photos of the little details in life that are different than you're used to.
2. Of course, be courteous. Don't take photos of specific people without permission, etc. That seems like an obvious one, but a lot of people seem to do that while traveling. I've got a relative from Africa who, on her last visit, commented that someone went as far as to walk up to a window and take a photo of the family inside. I'm sure you'd never do that, but it never hurts to have a reminder.
3. Obviously, make sure you've got everything you'll need for your camera -- extra batteries / charter, an extra memory card, etc. Keep in mind that there may be a difference in electricity so an adapter may be needed. If you have a laptop or netbook, take it. Sync your photos to it often -- there's nothing worse than losing the camera or memory card, or having a problem with the memory card.
4. I thought of something else related to number 2 -- When taking a photo specifically of people, though candid shots are nice, asking them if you can take a picture will give them a chance to smile and really brighten up the photo.
5. Take quality shots. Get your camera on the best settings you can have for the best photos you can have. It's the little details that make it worth it. That said, make sure you have storage space -- I would take at least three memory cards. One gets lost, one has some kind of problem or stops working, you have one left. Make sure each one has enough space for a few hundred photos. If you don't have a laptop, have even more memory available to you.
6. Keep your camera on a STRONG neck strap. It's helpful if you want to let go of the camera for a few minutes, and can also be helpful if you end up in a crowded area and the camera might be jostled out of your hand -- a strong neck strap will keep it from going crashing toward the ground.
7. Just in case, take a disposable camera or two with you everywhere you go. If you miscalculate how much storage space you'll need on a certain day and somehow run out or forget your spare card, or the same with batteries, the disposable can still help you get a few memories if something important comes up.
