You have a good budget. First, consider this. The camera body that you chose is the LEAST important part of the camera system. Wanna know THE most important part? Look in a mirror. Now the second most important part...the lens.
I say that to say this, don't try to find a camera that costs $1999 because you can afford that. You would be doing yourself a disservice.
Since I'm a Canon shooter I can only bring Canon knowledge to the table. Your budget in US dollars is around $1650, so I will use that since Im more familiar with it.
For that money you could get a decent Canon body. A 40D maybe (around $600-$700). There is also the Rebel XTI for around $400 That would leave you with almost $1000 (give or take) to get a couple of decent lenses or one really good lens. The choice in lens would be dependent on what you're shooting.
Try to be discerning when you chose your camera. Don't get caught up in the nonsense that "more megapixels is better". That is simply not true. Since the general public is under that impression they now use that as a selling point and sometimes it hurts more than it helps to have more MP. I think my 40D is 10..something like that. Thats more than you need for standard prints.
Sorry I don't have a more specific suggestion on the camera, but I just wanted to offer this up to you. It is not the camera that makes the image. Its you!
Cheers,
A
