this question is very bit vague. photography has been around for many centuries so to 'learn' about it, you need to be more specific. what do you want to learn about it? do you want to know how to take photographs, process/print them, or the history of it?
i reckon go with a film camera to start off if you're just getting into it. even an old film camera with the basic settings. this will help you to familiarise yourself with camera, and framing photos, and other creative techniques you may like to try - you don't have to worry about settings etc.
but saying so, get your hands on a cheap point and shoot digital and do the same. just experiment with what you have. you don't need an expensive camera to take good photos.
as for information, there is heaps online, just hit up google.
what do you want to know? history, photographers, styles, techniques, settings, lighting, accessories, equipment ... - there is no 'photography in general'. also try your local library for books and 'how-to' guides.
