I've signed a release before when I modeled (though I didn't get a copy and I never printed any photos), but am not sure how it works for families. Do I need them to sign a release like this? Or just a contract... I made my own with examples from others based on what I would be offering, how long it would take, and their rights to the photos. I did this because I took pictures of my cousin and her family and she caused a great deal of grief when she expected to receive every single image and I gave her only the best (edited). I'm learning, and I want those who I take pictures of to understand that they are getting a certain number, and that I am picking them, and that they agree to this.
My question would be, do they need to sign a release, or is the contract enough? When I give them their photos do I give them a copy of the contract they signed, a copyright release, or both? The contract states what I am allowing them to do with the photos.
