Photography as a career?

I am in year 9 at school so I've got a bit of time on my hands, but anyway I was wondering what is involved in photography as a career. How would I get involved with companies like Lonely Planet or National Geographic for travel photography? What education (courses, college, etc) would I need to undertake? What sort of money would I make? Basically what is it like in general? if it makes any difference i'm not interested in wedding photography - i'm interested in nature, landscape, cities, possibly people, things like that.

Thanks in advance

You have a tremendous advantage in that you already write correctly. That's a start.

If I were doing it all over again I would write an article for National Geographic, or Conde Nast Travel, or whatever magazine catches your fancy, and shoot the illustrations to go with it and send it in to them and see what they say.
