Hello to the masses
I just Graduated high school and i have a passion for art/photography. i love taking black and white photos. I would like help with the purchase of my first Student/Semi-Pro Camera. A lot of people have said that i should buy a Nikon d-40 or any kind of Digital SLR. ANY help would be highly appreciated
The picture that inspired me to become a photographer was the "Afghan Girl" it is so beautiful, and maybe one day i can take a picture like that.

again ANY and ALL information will be highly appreciated. Please provide links, pieces of articles , any thing that will help me live out my dream. PLEASE and THANK YOU , god bless

Well "a lot of people" are right. Pretty much any DSLR will give you a launching pad. It would have helped to know your approximate budget, but all the same I would likely make the same suggestions.

Get yourself a entry level body. The lens in the front and the brain in the back are the key factors. Camera bodies are not that important overall.
Nikon and Canon are both great manufacturers. I'm a Canon fella myself. Why? It wasn't megapixels (which is practically an irrelevant argument these days), or bells or whistles....it was the fact that it felt good in my hands compared to the Nikon. There is no "best" between the two. They both have "versions" of practically the same body. Get your self to an electronics store and feel them in your hands...get the sales person to let you put a lens on as well. You can get a feel for the balance that way.

Side note: They are SALES people. Don't let them make your choice for you by telling you that this one is better than that one because of megapixels and yada yada yada....

Ok...we've been to the camera store, and found something we liked...probably close to your budget, maybe just out of reach...

Next stop: Classified ads, Craigslist, eBay

Every piece of equipment I own is used and I have saved a ton because of it. A lot of people are upgrade freaks so you can find the "next model down" from the newest often on these sites for a little savings.

Now we need GLASS! I personally shoot prime lenses mostly because I shoot portraits. I use some zooms, but a 50mm 1.8, or 85mm 1.8 prime are great for portraits. If you're into landscapes you're probably going to want a decent zoom. I'll leave that suggestion to someone else because that just ain't my thang...:)

Hope this string of rambling has helped some....:)

Cheers,

A
