Do the phones available in S. Korea function for US GSM carriers?
I know that I would need a quad band phone.

Does anyone know of any sites where I can look at phones available in S. Korea to get specs and that sort of information to figure this out?

I have an opportunity to obtain a phone from S. Korea and was hoping that I could find something better than the rubbish currently offered by Cingular.
Thanks.

Quad band phones from Korea or Japan are out of the question........ Everything that works in the US is either CDMA or Tri-band GSM (with W-CDMA)

If you want a phone that works on GSM, you need to be looking at Japanese phones. The Sharp subforum is a good place to start. 902SH, 903SH and 703SH are great models to start with (there are a few better ones but they are either locked or don't have the suitable GSM bands.

If you want a phone that works on CDMA, you need to be looking at Korean phones, but you'll either need to know an insider with Verizon etc (no chance of getting it activated otherwise) OR go to your local Koreatown and find one there.

You *might* get better coverage (if that's an issue to you) if you settle with the CDMA option, however it'll be harder to locate a Koreatown or someone who can do it for you. If you don't neeed the 850MHz GSM band, then Japanese phones come by FAR more easily. And you'll also get help (from HowardForums) on them a lot faster.
