I am currently researching the same sorts of issues. I got a Blackberry about a year ago and haven't really kept up on the market since then.
Here is what I have found so far:
Motorola makes a line of phones that have GPS functionality, but limited graphic capabilities. They are only functional on the iDEN networks (Mike in Canada and Nextel in the US). These will give you GPS co-ordinates that you might be able to output to a laptop. With software, they will also give you direction and distance info, but it doesn't appear that they will allow you to load Streets and Trips or any graphical mapping software...
Benefon of Finland makes GSM compatible phones with GPS and some mapping such as the Traack Pro or the ESC!. Unfortunately, they ar pretty expensive and do not offer much in the way of expandibility or other features that you would expect to see for a phone in their price range.
There are other GPS assisted phones. I'm just getting started on the reading, but it appears that this means that if you call 911, the emergency service would be given gps info about your location. It does not appear that these phones actually allow the user to access the info for mapping purposes though... I'm not sure why this is. A shot in the dark guess until I do the reading is that perhaps the GPS info is not generated by the phone, but rather, it is an estimate based on the tower and direction that you are bouncing off of. Anyhow, I am guessing here.
Nokia made 3 GPS antennas. One is the LAM-1 which plugs into the 9200. This does not appear to be a North American model and I haven't researched it to know if it is GSM or any other compatibility issues. The second is the GPS Shell CC-70D. Is is specifically made to attach to the 5140, a discontinued phone... I doubt that this is a good avenue to follow unless you already have this phone...
The third and most viable Nokia option is the LD-1W. This is a stand alone battery powered GPS antenna that connects to a PDA or phone via bluetooth. It should be compatible with any bluetooth device, but might be the best choice for Nokia users to avoid compatibility nags...
As an above post already said, there are other manufacturers that have also produced stand alone antennas.
Sooo... There does not seem to be a good PDA/Phone that integrates that GPS antenna yet. There are some PDA's that have it (AXIM and MIO I think both have models out currently that are competitive and feature rich). The choices seem to be 1) wait for the technology to get there, 2) Get 2 devices.
Being the impatient guy I am, I think I will be going with #2... The next question is what combination? 1) GPS device + PDA/Phone, 2) PDA/GPS + Phone, or 3) GPS/Phone + PDA. For reasons discussed above, I have ruled out #3. For me, I think choice #1 with the bluetooth antenna is the best, since I always want my phone and PDA with me, but don't always need the GPS.
I will do some reading on the various bluetooth antenna's and post what I find here.
My next issue is which PDA/Phone. Can anyone give some comments on the following models:
O2 XDA Atom
O2 XDA (other models)
I-Mate K-JAM, Dopod 818 Pro, E-TEN M600, Audiovox PPC 6700, HTC Prophet (I think these are all the same)
Is there a Samsung i730 for GSM ?
Any other comparable models?
I am looking for a world phone with 850 band, with EDGE speed for data, with WIFI (preferrably 802.11g), bluetooth, qwerty keyboard, removable memory cards in a common industry standard such as SD.
If you have iny interest in this type of device, please post our findings here to help each other out. Feel free to message me direct if you wish...
