Phone Upgrade - Looking for Suggestions

Hi there, new to the forum so thanks in advance for the help!

I have the opportunity to upgrade my phone in December due to the New Every Two plan. I have a Samsung Juke and I honestly can't wait to get rid of the damn thing.

Anyway, I am pretty ignorant about the new cell phone technologies and between working 40+ hours a week and taking 14 units at school this semester I just don't have the time to do extensive research on the subject. I was wondering if someone could recommend a phone based on the following features:

- Can sync to Outlook
- Has some way of reading PDF's
- Can work with Excel
- Takes either SD or Micro SD cards
- Has music playback
- Ability to take pictures (maybe video too)
- Internet, I'm really not sure about. I'm always around a computer at work, home, or school. I don't even know how much it would be to add that to my plan, but I guess it could be useful if I am out on the road and need to find something.
- Cheap as possible

Thanks again for the help!

Actually, if someone could just name a few that at least support .PDF documents, I can figure out the rest from there as the other features seem to be pretty common (well, besides Excel support which probably isn't completely necessary).

It sounds as if you will be looking into a smartphone to get the pdf files and to be able to sync to outlook as well as the SD card for your pictures and video. I have to say there are a few good selections out and to do your homework on each since to recommend a specific phone is never my style. I do love the Blackberry phones, and the curve is awesome and be sure to look at the tour, and depending on your time frame on getting a new phone, the Storm 2 is coming out very soon, Now for other phones the EnV 3 is good and their is the LG Dare that may be good as well. Unfortunatly each of these phones will require the data package to be outlook freindly and to use basic internet. I would check the stores but I think that the data package is 29.99. hope that this information is helpful and good luck shopping around. BTW you may want to go to your local Walmart or Best Buy stores, you can get the same phones cheaper than the main Verizon stores.

I would have to say Blackberry also. The Curve, Storm, Tour, etc all do what your asking and more.

As for the plan. All Blackberry's and for that matter all smart phones require a data plan. You get email, email forwarding, pushing, internet, etc all in the plan.

As for websites to go to there are plenty of great sites for blackberry's. One of the best is crackberry.com. Also, Blackberry itself has plenty of free software on it's site.

Hi, thank you for all the suggestions. I definitly have a good starting point.

About the data plan, I am really not sure if I want to fork out another $30 a month for a feature that might be cool to have sometimes, but I probably wouldn't use that much. The $15/mo that someone mentioned previously seems a little more reasonable.

I guess my question now is, will these devices allow you to install applications, update OS, and import Outlook calender data via Micro/SD cards or do you have to download these things through the internet with the device?

I got to thinking about how I said "sync to Outlook" and I think I probably mispoke. Syncing to me means if Outlook is updated on my PC, for example, it will also update the phone. However, I'm just using Outlook to keep track of when my school assignments are due and to write reminders for myself as I find Outlook's Calendar very flexible in regard to reminders, alerts, and reoccurences. If anything, I'd just use my PC to make the schedule (using a keyboard is just much quicker) and then import it to my phone and just use the phone.

Thanks,

Uro

by saying
- Can sync to Outlook
- Has some way of reading PDF's
- Can work with Excel

i think you have to have a smartphone
the excel is the kicker.
i know winmo can do all this, and i think blackberry can also
all new smartphones require a data plan
if you get one released prior to nov of 2008 you wont need a data plan, but beware if you access the internet on it you get charged

data plan requirements are coming to all netowrks soon. att just announced it starting in sept
