Phone / Ringer Feature Question

I bought an Samsung M500 over a week ago and am trying it out. I leave my phone flipped open on my desk a lot as I am disabled so flipping it open and closed a lot is a pain for me. I noticed the ringer barely makes a sound at all when it is flipped open but it rings at full volume I set it to (8) when the phone is closed.

I went to the sprint store and many other cell dealers at the mall and asked why it does this, most of their responses were that they thought all flip phones do this.

I have a Cingular RAZR V3 original model that rings at whatever setting I use when the phone is open or closed.

Is this low ring volume when flipped open a Sprint phone thing or a Samsung thing?? Or is this a new standard feature on flip phones?

I don't know about the m500, but if I recall correctly the a900 would ring a full volume, but since the ringer speaker was on the outside of the flip it would sound about half of the normal volume. Perhaps that's it?

No the speaker doesn't get covered. Sales guys are telling me it is a privacy feature to lower the ring volume when the phone is open... I don't get it.. I like the m500 but that busg me and the no speakerphone button bugs me too.

I can live with the no speakerphone - just remember the key combo and hit it quickly; you don't need to wait for the menu, if you tap it in it will just go to speakerphone on it's own. Well, if your are disabled then I can see how that would be a problem.

I know I've heard of that volume thing somewhere, it was so that when you are using the phone in your hand it would not start to scream in your face, but would ring a bit quieter. But I don't know what phones do not do that. You might want to ask in the sprint section - those guys know all about the various phones.

One quick way - if nothing else works - would be to use a bluetooth headset. You would not need to put it into speakerphone that often, and the headset has it's own ringer sound; I just keep mine in my ear while working.
