Phone for traveling around the world

Hey everyone,

I'm going to be going abroad this fall and traveling to a bunch of different countries:

Japan
China
Hong Kong
Vietnam (maybe cambodia while there)
Myanmar
India
Egypt
Turkey
Croatia
Spain

In my research, ive pretty come up with that prepaid sim is the way to go for me. Problem being, I've got verizon right now, so i cant use the phone i have currently. I've been looking on ebay for tri/quad band unlocked phones, and there are tons of them. I'm not sure which way to go on this issue. On one hand I can't spend a bunch of money on the phone (the trip carries a heafty price tag of its own) but id rather spend more to get a good phone than some POS that like barely works.

Just wondering if anyone has some phone suggestions for a situation like this.]

Thanks a lot,
Steve

I will also be embarking on a trip throughout that part of the world soon and this is what I did. I went to this website first to figure out what GSM frequencies the specific countries use.

Once I figured out what frequencies the countries I am visiting use, I decided what frequency I must have. I believe you can make do with a basic tri-band phone but with 900 instead of 850. I would try getting a used unlocked Motorola V600 off eBay. That?s the phone I took last year and it worked great. However, if you want something newer, maybe a used unlocked RAZOR. My .02

Unlocked RAZR's are cheap, so they should work well. Also another suggestion is the Motorola V635, they have better cameras (and an LED flashlight too) and they are very solidly built, plus they are quadband, like the RAZR, so it will work well anywhere. Warning though, they are pretty thick, definitely not RAZR thin.

Bottom Line: Motorola has a tonne of quadband phones, and although some might argue, I think they have the best mixture of reception and features for their especially cheap prices, so I would go with them, whichever model you choose.
