so im due for a new phone soon.
im thinking of a smartphone/blackberry

current thoughts are
storm
omnia

heres my question.
are there any verizon phones that have an unlocked gps that you can use with free apps, similar to iphone. or is the only option vznavigator?

any thoughts on these 2 phones?

I think VZW recently unlocked the GPS on these two phones. I can remember reading somewhere that they unlocked it on the Storm, but maybe I am misremembering.

Personally I use a Blackberry Curve, and I love the BB OS, and I have used windows Mobile before, Had a xv6600, and Xv6700, and i liked windows Mobile os. I would say though the touchscreen of the Storm really turned me off of that phone, mainly because having to press down was annoying as hell! Both Gps are unlocked for use with like blackberry maps, telenav etc. I think microsoft has pocket maps but im not sure. I recommend you definitely go to a Verizon store and try out both phones, because they are actually quite different. The omnia has no accelerometer so it doesn't go sideways automatically. I would personally go with the Omnia because windows mobile has some really good apps, and a lot of them are free and widely available, and browsing on windows mobile for me waS better than on the blackberry, at least with default software. Happy phone shopping.

a search of verizons website does say they will be will be looking at unlocking the gps on some phones, if the manufactures can do it to verizons standards

an email to customer service states they have no gps unlocked phones, the only option is vz navigator

I like the Omnia myself. I was going to get that, but could not justify paying for the data plan on top of everything else. I thought the Storm was not half the phone the Omnia is. After all the reviews from Many websites, and personal experience with playing with the phones (storm and Omnia) the Omnia was the better phone. IMO.
