If there is a better forum for this then let me know. I couldn't find a place for the uninitiated to ask about plans.
Here's what I've got:
Me: Cheap Virgin flip phone, $.18/min talk, $.10/text, $20 every 3 months minimum, which I stay under.
Wife: Kyocera Strobe/Switchback, Cricket, $47/month with taxes for unlimited talk, text, and web. This is basically our home phone.
Here's what we want:
Me: Low talk (like 100 minutes/month), qwerty keyboard (hard or virtual), maybe 50 texts or so per month. I have around $250 and like shiny things. An Android phone or used iPhone would be great, but plan cost is the most important thing. As long as there's a usable browser I could deal with a lame device, but I'd rather not. Email and light web browsing. I also need a good camera, since I use it to record my research, (I'm a mathematician and like to save my boardwork).
Wife: Low to average talk (maybe 300 minutes/month), qwerty keyboard (probably hard), about 50 texts/month. Lower cost phone (maybe $50). No or very low data.
I don't mind a contract, and realize I can get a better phone that way, but family plans seem to be pretty pricey for what we need. If I could buy a cool phone and use PAYG for voice with a cheap data and text plan that would be cool. My wife is perfectly happy with the Strobe.
I know Boost has cheap daily data usage fees, so I could always use that for myself, but I've heard service isn't so hot and data is painfully slow. I'm also thinking of the Sprint relay data-only plan for $30/month, and adding voice at $.20/min, but that might add up quickly and isn't an option for my wife. Is there a solution for $60-$70/month that would work for us? We also have google voice numbers, but VOIP over 3G isn't a good option.
