Does anyone know when these absoloutley fantsatic stories will be made into movies? They've done Harry Potter, Lord of The Rings and they are currently doing Narnia why not Northern Lights? Is is because of the anti-religion theme? Im guessing film companies are to afraid of offending the American god squaders.

I think you may be disappointed. I'd *heard*, though don't hold me to this, that the religious side of the story was going to be scrapped altogether. Not sure why or how considering it's an essential part of the story. Needless to say I wasn't happy when I heard about it!

At the moment, New Line Cinema do intend to cut out the anti fundamentalism stuff. That is to say, the heart of the whole story. There was news of this a while back, and some lively discussion on:

Apparently, Pullman sold the rights and has zero say as to the way the films are made, or what content is excluded. At worst, his brilliant books could be made into horrible, Bible-Belt friendly parodies, featuring cute American kiRAB who love God, the flag and apple pie. :(

So the script outline will end up something like-
A group made up of a powerfull British corporation and some mad scientists (baddies)plan on keeping this new fangled discovery to themselves,(killing people throughout) when along comes this American orphan child who with the help of some all American frienRAB(goodies) saves the world
Result - nothing like the book, big hit in America

This could be the perfect film if the right person does the script and they keep in all mentions of the Authority. How can they take that out? For God's sake,
Lyra is Eve, Will is Adam and the doctor lady in The Amber Spyglass is the serpent!
How the hell can they take that out - it's the whole point of the story.

Ever since I read the Dark Materials trilogy, I've been dying for this to be filmed.

But if they are going to change everything to suit middle America, then they shouldn't bother :(

There are alot of good book adaptions of films being made next year, namely Airborn and The curious incident of the dog in the nighttime. I aint read Pullmans dark materials but ive heard they are good.

I've lost interest since I heard that the whole religious bit was to be snipped from the script. It would be nice as a film, but only if the core plotline was left well alone.
